The Royal Academy of Dance offers a wide range of courses, classes and workshops for young people
Many congratulations to Scottish student Luke Watson!
Luke, 11, attended the recent Boys Only! Edinburgh course primarily to improve his drama skills but enjoyed the ballet classes so much that he was able to obtain a late audition at the Dance School of Scotland for a full time ballet course and has been accepted!
The Boys Only! course introduced Luke to ballet and the RAD is delighted that he has discovered a love of dance and will start his full time ballet course in August. Luke commented:
"I loved the Boys Only! course and the chance to try ballet with other boys. I am so excited to have got into the ballet course at the Dance School of Scotland and look forward to moving to Glasgow in August to start my new life".
Head of the Dance School of Scotland (Elaine Holland) comments:
"We are delighted that Luke is joining the Dance School of Scotland and thrilled that the recent RAD Boys Only! weekend was the inspiration for him trying ballet for the first time and awakening such a passion for dance in him. He joins an intake of 10 boys in our new first year starting in August and we are greatly looking forward to working with Luke and the other boys".
And Luke’s ballet teacher at the Boys Only! Weekend also had noticed his potential. Jonathan Barton (Ballet West) comments:
"I was astonished to learn that Luke had never done ballet before. As we started class I was amazed at how well he understood things and how fast he picked things up. I used him in the repertoire section as one of the two lead boys and he was fantastic. What an incredible story and I'll look forward to reading about him in the future!"
Due to the demand for more Boys Only! classes, several RAD Scottish teachers are now planning to offer Boys Only! classes within their normal timetable from August. Further details are available from jmacfarlane@rad.org.uk
